Giving Townsville mums the tools to transform their births into a unique experience is what two local doulas are endeavouring to achieve.
Sara Moul and Karlee Flynn opened Let’s Talk Birth this month at Gulliver.
The duo have a combined nine years experience as doulas and provide support and non-medical intervention.
After starting a fortnightly birthing circle in Townsville in January, Ms Moul and Ms Flynn set about extending their reach.
“We approached each other at the beginning of the year because we knew the demand was there,” Ms Moul said.
“We basically are there as a safe space for women to open up and talk about the reality of what motherhood can be.”
Ms Flynn said labour could be a beautiful experience.
First-time mum to five-week-old Lahni, Kirsty-Rae Price, 29, said Karlee and Sara’s support had been invaluable.
“Ever since I was a teenager I wanted doula support and I luckily stumbled across Karlee and Sara’s birth circle,” she said.
“I did the work with Karlee and I prepared myself and I planned and made my birth plans and five weeks later I couldn’t be happier.”
First-time mum-to-be Hannah McQuillan, 30, is expecting a girl on January 4 and said Ms Moul and Ms Flynn were her muses.
“The girls have been fantastic and they are great support and are extremely empowering,” she said.
“They are a massive advocate for minimal medical intervention which is what we need more of in society.”
