A group of inspiring cheerleaders is hoping to put Townsville on the map.
Townsville Dance and Cheerleading owner and coach Fiona Brown was inspired to create a squad with people with special needs by her sister, Allan McNichol, who had Down syndrome and tragically died aged 40.
“She always wanted to do cheer,” Ms Brown said.
She led her CheerABILITY squad of 10 into their first competition at the weekend, taking on the rest of Australia in the CheerCon Nationals.
Ms Brown said the team of 10 had a range of disabilities but it did not set them back.
“They’re a colourful bunch. I’ve got a fair few on the spectrum; one is partially blind,” she said.
“But this team actually doesn’t need our help at all, they run well as a squad.
“They’re absolutely amazing, I just cried watching them performing.”
The CheerABILITY squad performed under unique circumstances, with performances videoed and judged remotely.
Ms Brown said the team would have to wait until the week before Christmas to find out how they went.
