A six-month-old baby girl from Townsville will go under the knife for critical heart surgery in the most daunting hurdle yet of her inspiring health journey.
Deeragun mum Rebecca Ferguson said her family’s life was turned upside down this year after she gave birth to her baby girl Jaylene Ferguson who was diagnosed with a genetic disorder — called 22q11.2 deletion syndrome — which left her with heart defects.
The now six-month-old bub will now have to go under the knife for heart surgery at Mater Children’s Hospital in Brisbane next Tuesday, September 13.
During the hours-long procedure, doctors will repair a hole in Jaylene’s heart, along with addressing a rare condition caused by a combination of four heart defects called Tetralogy of Fallot.
Mrs Ferguson said the prospect of her baby daughter undergoing surgery was nothing short of daunting.
“Not going to lie, I have not stopped my alone moments of tears since finding out,” she said.
“The past month has just left me a wreck as the date for surgery was actually not meant to be for another two months at least.
“But it came a week after being told to expect another two months of waiting!”
The Ronald MacDonald House will be helping to accommodate the family as of next Tuesday.
“Times like this, it’s so important family stay together because it takes a toll,” Mrs Ferguson said.
“I don’t know how I would manage this without my husband.
“He had to drive here and the way petrol prices are, you can imagine how much is getting spent out of pocket
“All of this just adds to the anxiety of knowing what’s to come. I dread to see her after surgery in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).”
