The Bruce Highway is about to re-open after a horror night of crashes north of Townsville.
Three people aged in their 20s were killed in two separate crashes just 2km apart near Mutarnee.
Confronting photos taken from the scene show the wreckage of three of the cars involved, including
A 27-year-old Bambaroo man, a 26-year-old Bushland Beach woman and a 23-year-old Atherton man were killed.
The Bushland Beach woman and Atherton man died in a crash that happened about 12.20am at Mutarnee.
A Toyota Landcruiser crashed into the rear of a stationary Mazda 3 as it travelled south.
The Mazda 3 crashed into a Mitsubishi Lancer, which in turn hit another four-wheel-drive.
The Bushland Beach woman, who was the driver of the Mazda 3, died at the scene.
Members of the public and emergency services gave first aid to the Atherton man, however he also died on scene a short time later.
The driver of the Landcruiser, a 31-year-old Mundingburra man, was taken into police custody.
It is understood cars were sitting stationary on the highway following the first crash at about 6.30pm, that resulted in the death of the Bambaroo man, when the Landcruiser allegedly crashed into Mazda 3.
The Lancruiser driver, who is yet to be charged, remains in hospital.

Three people aged in their 20s have been killed and several others are injured following two separate crashes north of Townsville overnight.
At about 6.30pm a truck and a Mitsubishi Lancer collided head-on on the Bruce Highway, near Barrett Road.
The driver the Lancer, a 27-year-old Bambaroo man, died at the scene.
The driver of the truck, a 60-year-old Beenleigh man, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
At about midnight a 26-year-old Bushland Beach woman and a 23-year-old Atherton man were killed in a collision about 2km north from the first fatal incident.

The Mazda 3 has crashed into a Mitsubishi Lancer, which in turn hit another four-wheel-drive.
A 26-year-old Bushland Beach woman, who was the driver of the Mazda 3, died at the scene.
Members of the public and emergency services rendered first aid to a 23-year-old Atherton man, however he also died on scene a short time later.
Three other people travelling in the four-wheel-drive were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Landcruiser, a 31-year-old Mundingburra man, was taken into police custody.
He was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The Bruce Highway is expected to be closed in both directions until midmorning.
Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing investigations of both crashes.
