Suncorp has confirmed it will employ 120 new people in Townsville, the location of a new office hub in the CBD and a major partnership with the North Queensland Cowboys.
Steve Johnston, CEO of the ASX-listed insurance company, said the hub would be located in the old Westpac building at 22 Walker Street, in what will be a major shot in the arm for the Townsville central-business district.
“Suncorp’s Townsville hub will strengthen our local workforce by an additional 120 people over the next two years, with roles focused on sales and service operations,” he said.
“This will help us respond to the growing needs of our customers and adds to the team of 40 people already based here.”
Mr Johnston said the insurer, which completed the sale of its banking arm to ANZ in July this year, was committed to strengthening regional job opportunities.
“Suncorp is a proud Queensland organisation, and today’s announcement reinforces our commitment and investment in our home state.”
He said the new hub would also have the ability to “quickly transform into our own pop-up disaster-management centre after major extreme weather events”.
“This allows us to mobilise our workforce locally and deploy them on the ground to support impacted north Queensland communities.”
The insurer expects to start the recruitment process early next year.
Suncorp also announced a new two-year partnership agreement with the Cowboys NRL and NRLW programs, the presenting partner of the Cowboys Game Participation Program and the Cowboys Community Foundation.
“Today’s announcement reinforces our commitment and investment in our home state,” he said.
“North Queensland is vibrant and growing and we could think of no better partner than the Cowboys to help us support this important region.”
Cowboys CEO Jeff Reibel said the partnership “represents a clear vision and strong alignment of values between our two organisations”.
“North Queenslanders are known for our toughness and resilience and Suncorp has always been there, helping when people need it most.”
He said the NRL club was looking forward to working with the insurer “to make a difference both on and off the field”.
The new Townsville hub is part of Suncorp’s $25 million jobs and investment commitment to the Queensland Government in the sale of Suncorp Bank.
