A man who is accused of tattooing a woman, assaulting her and stealing a dog has applied for bail.

Ry Liam Smith appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court via video link on Monday morning after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman.

Mr Smith has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed or in company, breaching bail, trespass, wilful damage, stealing, possessing a knife in public and unlicensed driving.

No pleas have been entered.

It was alleged by police prosecution that he tattooed his name on the woman’s finger against her will.

Magistrate Richard Lehmann said the case against the man involving the alleged assaults in March and April last year were “strong”.

“He spent nine years since 2015 in custody and the offending he’s alleged to have committed was shortly after being released from custody,” His Honour said.

However it was noted by the magistrate that the charges against Mr Smith involving the stealing of a dog were “weak”.

Mr Smith has claimed the dog he allegedly organised to have stolen during a phone call from inside prison was his own.

The magistrate acknowledged further allegations that were not charges which included Mr Smith seeing the woman in public and yelling that he would kick her head in, and his associate yelled “you’ll find your way into the trunk of a car”.

Ultimately Magistrate Lehman found it an “unacceptable risk” for Mr Smith to be let out on bail as he had previous charges of not showing up to court and he deemed it too much of a risk to the woman.

Mr Smith could be seen shaking his head and rubbing his hands over his face when his application was rejected.

His charges were adjourned to May 23.
