Toilet paper panic: Shoppers start stockpiling over coronavirus fears

North Queensland is in the grips of a toilet paper shortage with shelves being stripped bare shortly after being restocked thanks to coronavirus fears.

There is some relief with some supermarkets revealing their stocks will be replenished soon.

Many supermarkets have sold out, with staff revealing they have even been abused by aggressive customers desperate for bog roll.

The panic buying, sparked by coronavirus fears, has led to extraordinary scenes across Australia with some fighting it out for the last of toilet paper supplies.

We contacted supermarkets across Townsville, Charters Towers, the Burdekin and Hinchinbrook to find out what they had available and when they would be restocking.

“Madness” and “insanity” is how the managers of two separate stores that stock – or stocked – toilet paper in response to the continuing demand in Hinchinbrook.

It is also understood that the town of Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday Islands has completely run out of tissue supplies.

Yvonne Bosworth, manager of Mitre 10 Canegrowers, said this afternoon that they had sold its final 18 packs or 18 rolls by Friday morning and was unlikely to have more until next Monday, at the earliest “if Mitre 10 restock”.

“Friday morning, it was gone … they were coming in, grabbing a pack; we even had people who were picking it from people in Townsville,” she said.

“It’s madness,” she said, adding that even stationary shops and smaller traders stocks had been sold out.

Coles and Woolworths in Ingham have been contacted for comment.

Matt Caldwell, the owner and operator of Silly Solly’s discount store outlets in Ingham and Airlie Beach, told the Express that he had sold out of tissue products last week.

Only Silly Solly’s on the Gold Coast had been able to replenish, he said.

“It is unattainable,” Mr Caldwell said, adding he did not know when he would be able to restock.

The problem was particularly problematic in North Queensland, he said.

“It’s insanity, I’m hoping to get some next week but I’m not holding my breath, it’s insanity, I can’t believe it.”

Mr Caldwell said Airlie Beach had completely run out of tissue products.

“There’s nothing; I went to most supermarkets yesterday, there’s zippo, zero.”

Charters Towers

Woolworths Charters Towers store manager Greg MacDonald said the store hadn’t experienced a shortage yet.

“We get stock in each day, customers can buy as much as they want,” Mr Macdonald said.

“The national limit at Woolworths is set at two packs per transaction.”
