AN ANONYMOUS online crusader is calling out keyboard warriors spreading racism and hate speech on social media, saying it has no place in Townsville.
The creator of social media page Racists of Townsville, who has asked to remain anonymous, said she was compelled to start the page last month, where she names and shames people for racist comments and interactions online.
She said majority of the disgusting comments are being posted to the raft of private crime groups on Facebook, primarily crime group C.A.T.R, which she will then screenshot and share to her public page.
Some of the comments are too vulgar to publish, but the creator is not scared of holding people accountable for their words online.
“They see nothing wrong with using racial slurs like c--n, sp--k and ni----, and spread false information to push their agenda … nothing that they do helps our crime problem in any way,” she said.
“Some of the racial slurs that are used/encouraged in these groups are disgusting and I just feel that if they are that comfortable using that kind of hate speech on Facebook then they shouldn’t have an issue with the public knowing who they are,” she said.
Despite her intentions, the creator, who has lived in Townsville for 13 years, said she has received her fair share of hateful messages.
“The response from the public has been mixed,” she said.
“I’ve had people inboxing me … thanking me because they are too scared to say anything themselves but … I’ve had a lot of stuff reported and some hate messages.”
She hoped the page would make people realise the impact of their words.
“My ultimate goal for the page is that these people realise that what their saying is disgusting and shouldn’t be tolerated.
“I think Townsville definitely has an issue with racism, but social media and these private crime groups have made people more confident to say stuff they wouldn’t say in real life.”
Last week, the Townsville Bulletin reported on a group who plastered racist posters across the city, claiming “white youths patrol this area for your security”.
The Townsville Free Corps are now being investigated by police.
“Racism isn’t acceptable and we encourage the community to work with us by supplying information to combat crime,” Detective Inspector Chris Lawson said.
“Significant penalties apply and the community can rest assured police will fully investigate matters brought to their attention.”
