Two inmates at a Townsville prison have been rushed to hospital following a suspected drug overdose.

Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) confirmed that two male prisoners aged 30 and 32 at the Townsville Correctional Centre “became unwell” and were hospitalised on Wednesday night.

Sources said the pair — who were being held at the men’s low-security farm — were unresponsive after a suspected overdose when officers found them around 6.30pm.

Officers commenced first aid and called Queensland Ambulance Service, who provided treatment and transported them to Townsville University Hospital.

Inside sources say there is a massive drug problem at the prison.

They say the black market drug Buprenorphine — also known as subbies — has plagued the jail, with prisoners resorting to using nappies, food and laundry to smuggle it in.

However, it still remains unclear what the prisoners may have taken on Wednesday night to make them so unwell.

A QCS spokesman said the incident will be subject to internal and police investigation.
