Patriotic pooches were catching sixes at their own Australia Day celebrations at doggie day care yesterday.
The centre at Hyde Park held its third annual Australia Day event in which the pups were treated to some iconic Australian games.
Over 40 dogs of all sizes, shapes and kinds indulged in a thong throwing competition as well as some backyard cricket.
Dogtopia Retreat manager Colby Busetti said the dogs had a ball participating in the iconic activities.
“We did the games in small groups so that all the dogs had a chance to get the thong so not just the quick ones were getting it,” he said. Pooches were also dressed in their best Aussie Day gear including bandannas featuring koalas, the Australian flag and cricket bats.
Mr Busetti said the day was a chance for humans and man’s best friend to both recognise the patriotic day.
“We try and do a special event each month to make sure the dogs don’t miss out on the activities that we get to celebrate as well,” he said. The retreat also donated $5 from every dog who attended the celebrations to helping wildlife affected by the Australian bushfires.
