THREE people were arrested during Townsville’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

One person was arrested for possession of a dangerous drug, while another was arrested for drink driving and the third was a man who was arrested in the Safe Night Precinct.

He was charged with two counts of public nuisance and serious police assault, and had his banning notice extended.

Townsville Police praised the behaviour of revellers after no major incidents were reported at the fireworks, with crowds quickly dispersing after the shows.

Police issued eight banning notices and seven move-on directions, as well as issuing a liquor infringement notice, two obstruct police infringements and six notices for public nuisance.

Townsville Patrol Inspector Damian Irvine said police were kept busy but was overall pleased with the behaviour of most people celebrating the start of 2020.
