EXCLUSIVE: Youth worker claims she’s told not to report juvenile crimes

AN ONSLAUGHT of violent and senseless crime has reared its head in Townsville, leaving a woman with internal injuries, a man fearing for his life, and police fed up.

The weekend of carnage kicked off in the early hours of Saturday morning when a woman was mowed down by a car in Condon about 5.45am.

She was left broken and bloodied on the side of the road at the corner of Gouldian Avenue and Mallee St as the car drove off, but luckily people nearby called an ambulance and stayed by her side.

The 31-year-old woman hasn’t been able to divulge much information to police due to her extensive injuries, which include a fractured leg, pelvis, back and a collapsed lung.

Hours later, a security guard “feared for his life” as a stolen car repeatedly rammed his vehicle in Douglas.

The white Toyota HiLux was stolen from a Rosslea house earlier in the night before the suspected juvenile driver rammed into Jarred Hooper’s car has he was finishing a shift.

Mr Hooper said he thought he was going to die as the ute rammed his sedan.

Police suspect the same juveniles were involved in a break-in at an Annandale store earlier in the night.

Townsville Police Inspector Dean Cavanagh said the actions were reprehensible.

Dean Cavanagh said a recent spate of crime was senseless and offenders had a complete disregard for community safety.
Dean Cavanagh said a recent spate of crime was senseless and offenders had a complete disregard for community safety.

“These are very serious offences, which had a complete disregard for any community safety whatsoever,” Inspector Cavanagh said.

“Some of the offenders will certainly be getting a visit from us very shortly.”

It comes after a recent spate of stolen car fires and crashes which saw six juveniles arrested in a matter of days last week.

Frightening hit and run in Townsville

Most of the group were kept in custody, but some were granted bail with conditions as Cleveland Youth Detention Centre swells to near capacity.

Inspector Cavanagh said those involved in the latest batch of crimes could be charged with more serious offences than just dangerous driving.

“When the investigation is finalised we will go further and charge what we can prove.

“All these offences are confronting and that’s why we work day and night to try and protect the community.

“We have a team of detectives who work every day through the day and through the night.”

When asked if police acknowledged a crime spike, Inspector Cavanagh said they focused on each individual offence and would worry about the statistics down the track.

He urged anyone with information about the offences, or dashcam vision around the area of the Condon hit and run to contact police immediately.
