A woman has pleaded guilty to a series of reckless money-related charges, with it being suggested she was “duped” into getting involved with the illegal dealings by a “relationship scam”.

Suzanne Marie Scott appeared in Townsville District Court on Valentine’s Day and pleaded guilty todealing with money reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime of $100,000 or more and recklessly engaging in conduct that relates to property of $100,000 or more.

Judge Gregory Lynham put to the court that the offences may have come from a scam.

“I know nothing about this matter at all,” he said.

“But looking at the charges, they commonly arise out of – at least in the court’s experience, relationship scams.”

Ms Scott’s defence barrister Darin Honchin replied, “yes”.

Judge Lynham continued: “Where someone gets duped into dealing with money and they believe the person they’re communicating with is in love with them.”

“That’s correct,” Mr Honchin replied.

His Honour noted that Ms Scott had already spent more than 12 months on remand.

“So I suspect there’s some urgency in getting this matter finalised,” he said.

His Honour listed the woman’s charges for sentence in Townsville District Court on March 17.
