Woolworths and Coles stores across North Queensland remain open for emergency supplies, with people asked to only buy what they need.

A Woolworths spokesman said some stores were due to receive deliveries today, however stores were closed in Hermit Park and Fairfield to comply with emergency orders and safety.

There are major road closures across the region with the Bruce Highway severed north of Townsville, and the road south of Townsville closed to most traffic.

Woolworths teams were also supporting the Salvation Army, and the Ingham store manager was taking emergency services to the store today to help restock the evacuation centre.

“We’re continuing to respond to the impact of heavy rains in far north Queensland and are working with our key transport and logistics partners to keep moving stock into our stores,” they said.

“With rail outages north from Brisbane, our teams are working hard to secure additional freight resources via road, while also monitoring road conditions.

“Our team is working hard to get additional stock to many stores today. However, as always, we ask customers to be mindful of others in the community and buy only what they need.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers, team members, and the communities we serve are our top priority.”

In a statement from Coles, a spokesman said they were monitoring the situation in the region.

“Our team worked hard to prepare our stores with essential supplies ahead of this weather event, and we are working closely with suppliers, transport partners and local authorities to maintain deliveries where roads remain accessible,” he said.

“We ask customers to only buy what they need so that everyone in the community can access essential items.”

Ottos opens with essentials

Otto’s Warrina remains open with a “constant” stream of customers coming in on Monday morning.

With plenty of fresh produce, bread, milk and meat on offer operations manager Renae Summers said the shop temporarily closed on Sunday as the rain got heavier, but were back open early Monday.

“We have an awesome team of bakers who have been coming in to keep the ball rolling with the bread,” she said.

“We’ve been serving coffees here since we opened.”

Ms Summers also said a few staff began work at 3am on Monday serving coffee and food to SES workers.

Mal’s Bakery in Oonoonba has remained open since the wild weather began, providing hot pies, fresh baked bread, sandwiches and cakes for the community.

The shops owner said they opened at 5am this morning and have been flat out the last few days.

He says it’s worth it to give back to the community that supports them.

“We know the essentials like milk, bread and we’ve tried to help as best we can,” the owner said.

With everything made in house, staff have been working nights to prepare the food and working during the day selling their fresh goods.

The owner said the shop had already sold out of bread by 8:30 on Monday morning.

“We’ll be open tomorrow [Tuesday] and will do another big lot of bread tonight,” he said.
