PRODUCTION of a new feature film is underway on the Great Barrier Reef with some of Australia’s rising stars.

The Reef: Stalked is the long-awaited sequel to the 2010 nailbiter The Reef, written and directed by Andrew Traucki.

The story follows four girlfriends on a kayaking and diving adventure that goes horribly wrong, and draws on themes of resilience, healing from trauma and strength in sisterhood and female friendship.

The crew will be on-site in Bowen for six weeks, with Traucki falling in love with the seaside town when filming a few scenes for the first movie.

“I’m thrilled The Reef: Stalked is in production and back to Bowen where we shot parts of The Reef eleven years ago,” Traucki said.

“As a lover of survival tales, there is nothing I enjoy more than storytelling that pits humans against nature and asks the question: how would I survive?

“In this genre, there’s nothing scarier to the audience than encountering an apex predator, one of the sea’s most magnificent creatures, the great white shark.”

Producer Neal Kingston from Thills & Spills said the film was set in the south eastern islands of Papua New Guinea, with Bowen providing the tropical paradise.

He produces the film alongside Michael Robertson, his Thrills and Spills partner, and Jack Christian from Filmology Finance.

“Bowen really gives us that,” Kingston said.

“It’s nice to be able to bring, films spend a lot of money … it’s nice to bring that back to the region where people have been hard hit by Covid.

“Anything we can do to share the love is something we’re proud to be able to do.”

Kingston said The Reef: Stalked had big shoes to fill with the Baz Luhrmann’s award-winning Australia also shot in Bowen.

“With The Reef, Australia and The Reef: Stalked, it puts Bowen on the map for three films to my knowledge,” he said.

Thrills & Spills has few thrillers under their belt, including another shark thriller Great White, which will hit the big screen this year.

The Reef: Stalked stars actors Teressa Liane (Neighbours, The Vampire Diaries), Ann Truong (Cowboy Bebop, Strike Back), Kate Lister (Unhinged, Fox Trap) and newcomer Saskia Archer.
