Mayor Liz Schmidt leaves self-isolation after COVID-19 scare

A North Queensland Mayor has emerged from two weeks of self-isolation following a close proximity meeting with COVID-19 carrier and Queensland Senator Susan McDonald.

The Charters Towers Regional Council Mayor has left isolation, 14 days after coming into contact with COVID-19 carrier and Queensland Senator Susan McDonald.

Speaking to The Northern Miner, Liz Schmidt said she was not showing any symptoms of the virus which has claimed the lives of 11 people nationwide.

“I am relieved I am not showing any symptoms and I can go back to doing my job for the community,” she said. “I am still working from home when I can.”

Cr Schmidt said the Charters Towers community should be congratulated for their efforts in reducing the spread of coronavirus.

“Our people are being careful and taking this COVID-19 pandemic seriously, that is ultimately what it comes down to,” she said.
“It will come, no doubt it will come but the way in which the community has responded to COVID-19 to begin with is really positive.”

Cr Schmidt sympathised with people who may be suffering from poor mental health as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Having spent time in isolation over the past two weeks I can sympathise with those who have done the same or are fearful of doing so,” she said.

“I had family members drop off groceries and other supplies but not being able to come into contact with them, share closeness which is a human need, was very difficult,” she said.

With the local government elections just days away, Cr Schmidt said it was set to be one of the most unique elections Queensland ever had.

“The community as a whole are embracing the fact they won’t have to be attacked with voting cards being shoved under their nose come election day,” she said.

“With extended voting hours to ensure those most at risk of contracting COVID-19 still have a say, it may well be a much more relaxed voting experience on Saturday.”
