A MAN who smashed through the rear doors of a North Queensland police station allegedly armed with a knife before being shot by officers has undergone emergency surgery.

The Bowen man, 35, was flown to Townsville Hospital late yesterday afternoon where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police said the man, allegedly armed with a knife and a chain, broke through the rear doors of the station about 2.30pm on Wednesday.

It’s understood two officers fired several shots at the man, striking him in the hand and abdomen.

Mackay Police Acting Superintendent Ian Haughton confirmed tasers were used in the incident.

He confirmed eight officers, and two administrative staff were in the station yesterday when the incident unfolded.

“Four of those officers are directly involved in the incident and the other four have some involvement to what happened in the aftermath of it,” Supt Haughton said.

“There were another two officers who were on patrol and responded back to the police station when the occurrence occurred.

“Two of the officers fired shots but the details and the intricacies around that are all subject to the investigation.”

Supt Haughton confirmed the ordeal was captured by the officers’ body cameras.

The incident is now being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Supt Haughton would not comment on whether the man was known to police or whether he was linked to any other previous incidents.

The lead up to what occurred, and the man’s state of mind, is now being investigated.

“That is all still subject to review and we are progressing some inquiries with that to establish the person’s frame of mind and their motivation for being here. That will all be subject to the investigation,” Supt Haughton said.

He said the officers were in “good spirits”.

Anyone who was in Bowen CBD and has dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
