A magistrate has slammed a Townsville man who “screwed up” and crashed his ute into a wall and did not stop.

A TOWNSVILLE carpenter who slammed his car into a brick wall while almost four times the legal limit has been slammed in court for his foolish behaviour.
Brendan Lee Johns, 25, pleaded guilty to four charges in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Thursday after he slid his car off the road and into a brick wall in Kirwan before he left the scene and continued on home.
The charges were driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to have proper control of a vehicle, driving without a licence and failing to comply with duties of a driver involved in a crash.
Police prosecutor Jordan Theed said police were called to a traffic complaint on the corner of Greenwood Drive and Trembath Crescent on May 4 where they found a set of tyre marks on the road indicating a car had crashed into a brick wall and driven off.
Mr Theed said police located a bumper bar on the ground and yellow paint on the wall before they drove to Johns’ house and found his ute out the front.
When questioned, Johns admitted he had been driving “far too quickly,” and slid around a corner, Mr Theed said.
He said when Johns was asked to produce his expired licence, police noticed he was “unsteady on his feet” and “slurring his words”.
A blood-alcohol test returned a reading of 0.184, almost four times the legal driving limit.
Representing himself in court, Johns told Magistrate Steven Mosch he was a carpenter who “just screwed up”.
He said he was now addressing his alcohol problems by attending alcohol counselling sessions.
Mr Mosch said it was a “more serious example of drink driving” and said it was “good luck more than good management no one was injured or killed”.
He fined Johns a total of $2550 for the offences, which was referred to SPER.
Convictions were recorded.
