A Townsville man is in the Intensive Care Unit at Mackay Base Hospital following a horrific crash which killed two businessmen.

Kelso man Johannes Van Stelten, 32, was taken to the Mackay hospital after the deadly crash at Carmila, about 100km south of Mackay, on Tuesday morning.

Mundingburra man John Van Stelten, 58, and Alice River man Mark Dunstan, 57, were killed instantly when a truck collided with their van on the Bruce Highway.

A Gympie man, 32, is critical condition in Townsville University Hospital.

Police said both vehicles were travelling north on the highway when the van pulled over and tried to perform a U-turn.

Photos showed the devastating impact, with the van cut in two.

John Maultsaid paid tribute to his mate, John Van Stelten, saying they shared some “radical classic times” over 40 years.

“R.I.P. John Van Stelten, my authentic friend of over 40 years. So proud to have shared some amazing memories. So proud to have known you in this life. A true noble warrior,” Mr Maultsaid posted on Facebook.

“A true friend in all weathers with the biggest heart of pure gold.”
