The Townsville community is once again being called to rally together to honour the memory of Jennifer Board, with a second memorial football carnival to be held in her name.

The first Jennifer Board Memorial Football Carnival was held on the first anniversary of the 22-year-olds death on Ross River Rd in February 2021.

Ms Board’s friend Luke Southgate is one of the organisers of the carnival, and last year expressed his hopes to have the event held this year.

He said he hoped this year’s event, set to take place on February 4 and 5, will have just as big of a turn out as the first carnival.

“We added 12 extra teams hoping to get more people in,” Mr Southgate said.

Food trucks, a live band, a coffee and ice-cream truck will be on-site for all to enjoy.

“We’ve got a live band for the Saturday night again and we’re also doing merch, stubby coolers and hats,” he said.

As of Thursday, there were five team vacancies available for those looking to form a team and join the carnival.

Mr Southgate said he was expecting more than 300 players to hit the field on the day.

“Just to have that many people there would be awesome,” he said.

For those wanting to watch on from the sidelines

Ms Board’s sister, Siana Board, will travel from Darwin for the carnival and will also head her own team.

Mr Southgate said the carnival was an important way to keep Ms Board’s memory alive, and said making it an annual event seemed more and more likely.

“That was the main goal, to keep her alive and her name alive, and I think we did that and it was pretty overwhelming really, once everything was done,” he said.

“It all hit at once and I thought ‘how awesome was that’, we didn’t hear a bad word about the weekend, and I feel like we’re improving a few things this year.”

People not registered to play are also welcome to watch on and enjoy from the sidelines.

“There’s a competitive side, and just for fun – even if a person has never played before, there’s stillroom for that at the carnival,” he said.

“We’re also moving the licensed area to the middle of (Victoria Park) for people who just want to relax.”

The second Jennifer Board Memorial Football Carnival will take place on February 4 and 5, 2023 at Victoria Park on Tully St, South Townsville.
