A man who stripped completely naked inside a busy community space, sexually assaulted a police officer after he was detained.

Jason John James Bradford appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court via videolink on Wednesday after a drug fuelled crime spree saw him rip toilet seats off women’s public toilets and spray shaving cream into a businesses electrical box.

Police prosecutor Ms Thomas said in January of this year he was approached by police on a number of occasions including after he was found by housekeepers rifling through coffee supplies at Shore Drive Motel.

However the court heard his actions escalated when he walked into the North Queensland Community Hub and got naked in front of others.

Police and staff became aware of what had happened after they heard a female scream and detained him, Ms Thomas said.

The 44-year-old was then placed with a female constable and “began pacing in front of her”.

“(Bradford) has used his right hand to reach out to the victim and grabbed the victim on the vaginal area of her pants,” she said.

The police officer quickly pushed him away.

In another incident, Ms Thomas said he went into the women’s bathroom in the Castletown shopping centre, pulled one of the toilet seats off and removed a hand sanitiser from the wall.

He also damaged the two wing mirrors on a personal mobility device.

Defence lawyer Kayla Doig said Bradford hadn’t planned on sexually assaulting the police officer and it had just happened in the “heat of the moment”.

The court heard he had struggled with mental health issues, drug and alcohol addiction and had been off his medication and homeless at the time of the offending.

Magistrate Richard Lehmann said Bradford couldn’t blame his actions on mental health issues and addiction as it’s a “deliberate choice not to take medication” and “a deliberate choice to use drugs.”

Bradford’s 145 days spent in pre-sentence custody was declared as time served.

He was sentenced to 145 days jail with immediate release under a 12 month supervision.
