A TOWNSVILLE woman has been handed a prison sentence after she threatened shoppers with a bottle at a local shopping centre.

Prosecutor Cody Rowe told the Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday Candice Rose Hopkins was threatening to assault shoppers at Vincent Village Shopping Centre on April 16 with a Jim Beam bourbon bottle.

Mr Rowe said when police arrived at the scene Hopkins was sitting on the floor at the entrance of the shopping centre yelling “f--k you dog c--ts”.

Security removed the empty bottle from Hopkins’s hands to prevent her harming anyone with it, Mr Rowe said.

Mr Rowe said the mother-of-two threatened to hit two men with it.

She pleaded guilty to one charge of public nuisance in court.

The court heard Hopkins was on parole at the time of the offence.

Hopkins lawyer Tracy Brown said her client clearly had an “issue with alcohol” and described the incident as “concerning”.

A criminal history was tendered to the court.

Magistrate Scott Luxton said probation was not an appropriate form of punishment for the offence as Hopkins continued to offend.

He ordered a sentence of one month imprisonment, wholly suspended for six months.

A conviction was recorded.
