A STRING of Townsville businesses will be forced to fork out hundreds of dollars in repairs after a senseless vandal went on a damage spree.
Police say at least 13 businesses, including Easysleep, AAA FNQ Battery Wholesalers and a clubhouse, were vandalised by a man in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The 29-year-old man allegedly threw rocks through glass windows and doors at multiple businesses along the long stretch of Ingham Rd, shattering the glass and causing extensive damage.
The man was eventually caught by police near IGA Garbutt, but he left a trail of destruction in his wake.
Member at a targeted clubhouse, Peter Parkinson said it was a cost many businesses couldn’t afford.
“We have to go out and spend money on what we really don’t need to,” he said.
“Every second business had broken windows this morning.
“Unfortunately, people who don’t have insurance could be in a lot more financial hardship.”
Mr Parkinson’s clubhouse was one of the first businesses targeted about 1.38am.
CCTV footage of the incident shows a man, wearing no shirt, walk straight up to the front door and start throwing rocks into the glass.
After several throws, he pushed the glass door and walked off to his next target.
The replacement door will cost the club hundreds of dollars.
Mr Parkinson said businesses on that stretch of Ingham Rd had been victims of crime before.
“It’s just a thoroughfare through there.”
“Had break-ins before next door but we’ve got them on video each time.”
Police arrested the Garbutt man early this morning and he has been charged with thirteen counts of wilful damage and one count of public nuisance.
He will face Townsville Magistrates Court this morning.
