A small rural rugby club with a big heart put on a mesmerising display of Champagne footie with a dash of Fijian flair as part of a sell-out charity ladies day.
The Ingham Cutters Rugby Club hosted five boys, girls and mixed matches against Townsville opposition followed by the senior men taking on their mates from Charters Towers in a third-grade contest on Saturday.
The Cutters men, playing down a grade in 2024, have enjoyed an unbeaten season and were easy victors over the Bulls thanks to two spectacular tries to Filipe Tabu, one of three Fijians in a strong Ingham side.
Earlier, the combined Ingham Cutters-Western Dragons U17 boys team side went down in a spirited loss to a well-coached Townsville Grammar side.
In arguably the best result of the day for the Ingham club, the Cutters U15 girls beat Teachers West for a memorable first-ever win over the strong Townsville club.
Ladies Day co-organiser Kaci Newman said 75 well-dressed women from a range of backgrounds enjoyed an afternoon of rugby and refreshments, raising at least $1000 for a woman’s cause.
The senior men sported specially designed ladies days rugby jerseys, purchasing all 25 after the match against Charters Towers to raise $1000 alone.
The club donated $1500 to victims of domestic violence following its last ladies day in 2021.
Ms Newman praised the way the junior girls players had stepped up to sell raffles, present prizes, serve food and clear tables during the event, which had sold out within five days of tickets going on sale.
“These young women love training, playing rugby and being involved with such a great club and it was a great way to show our sponsors, many of whom a women business owners, how great the sport is and how it has such a positive impact in the community,” she said.
“The day itself was a massive success, with the women kicking on well into the night.”
Ms Newman said she hoped the Ladies Day could become an annual event.
“All the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”
