Harry Patel, Carolyn Dare to run for Townsville City Council Division 10

Townsville nurse Harry Patel will take another tilt at a council position in the January Division 10 by-election.

Why voting is important

Townsville nurse Harry Patel will make another bid for a council position in the January Division 10 by-election.

He is one of five people, including runner-up in the March local government election Fran O’Callaghan, who will contest the Townsville City Council division.

Mr Patel has run in a number of elections, including for Division 10 in March, and against Mayor Jenny Hill in 2016.

In March, Mr Patel ran as part of the Greg Dowling team, but said he was independent now, and at every election he had been a part of before.

With a plan to focus on basic infrastructure, including water, sewerage and roads, Mr Patel wants to deliver the basics to the Division 10 community. “I feel the council have neglected our basic infrastructure,” Mr Patel said.

He said having lived in the suburbs in the council area for some time, he understands the key issues.

”The people in Wulguru don’t have any services,” Mr Patel said.

“I would like a flood map that makes Townsville secure for the future. “I want (to make sure) Lansdown station doesn’t affect the underground water.”

Long-term community advocate Carolyn Dare has put her name forward as a Division 10 hopeful.

In a Facebook post, Ms Dare said her work with the Townsville Crime Alerts and Discussions group had helped draw attention to crime issues.

“As a group we held rallies and liaised with the government attending meetings to discuss options and possible solutions,” she said.

“For the last eight years I’ve pretty much called TCAD my second family.

“I’ve juggled this in between running a business and raising my four children.

“I’ve always maintained a strong community connection through involvement in my kid’s school P & C, as a life member of APEX and as a sponsor/member of my local soccer club all while running a business in Wulguru.

“I’ve decided to take a leap of faith and make a further commitment to my community.”
