A 22-year-old Garbutt man has been charged after he allegedly threw rocks at a police vehicle.

A Garbutt man has been charged for wilful damage and assaulting police after he allegedly threw rocks at a police vehicle.

About 3.20am, it is alleged the occupants of a silver Mazda, believed to be stolen, were driving on Riveredge Boulevard at Oonoonba when they saw a police vehicle and fled.

It is further alleged that the same vehicle returned to the address and the man, 22, began throwing rocks at the police car.

They allegedly then fled the scene again in the same vehicle and drove towards oncoming police cars, including the dog squad ute, forcing officers to take evasive action to avoid being hit.

The Mazda returned to the scene and police identified the driver, alleged to have committed the crimes, and arrested him.

It will be alleged that other occupants of the vehicle threw rocks at arresting officers and the police vehicle.

One officer’s hand was injured, while another was hit in the leg by projectiles.

The man will appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday, July 10.

Investigations are continuing, and police are working to identify the three other people involved and locate the stolen Mazda.
