Don't miss out on the headlines from Townsville. Followed categories will be added to My News.
We asked you to vote for Townsville’s best PT, and one man clearly stood out, winning the 2023 competition with 44 per cent of the entire vote.
Rise Up PT’s Nicholas Hering said he was very thankful to be named Townsville’s best PT of 2023.
“I’m stoked I got nominated and stoked my people voted me through,” Mr Hering said.
“But I don’t think of myself as above any other trainer. We all have an important job to do.”
The Bulletin has been crowning the ‘best personal trainer’ for years, and Mr Hering joins a winner’s list which includes Paula Pool in 2021, Elev8ed Fitness owner Paul Seiuli in 2020
and Brent and Lyndsey Gorris in 2018 and 2019.
Mr Hering said in the four years he’s been a personal trainer he’s seen the fitness industry change rapidly.
“Fitness is always changing. There has been a lot more conversation around nutrition and new training principals,” he said.
“In my opinion to be a high quality PT you need to have an element of nutrition.”
Mr Hering said he personally liked to help clients with nutritional education, rather than placing them on diets.
“Rather than chucking someone on a diet which they’ll inevitably fall off, you teach them about nutrition. It’s like that saying, if I fish for you, I feed you for day, but if I teach you how to fish, you eat for a lifetime.”
These day Mr Hering works out of Strand Fitness and takes both in-person and online clients.
“I’ve got clients who live in Brisbane and a couple in Melbourne. I’m not just limited to Townsville and that’s a pretty cool thing,” he said.
“Picking a personal trainer is like picking someone to sell you a house. Anyone can do it, but it’s about picking someone you’re going to get along with and feel comfortable around.”
Mr Hering said trust was a major factor.
“Trust means you understand your coach is doing the right thing to get you results,” he said.
“People know I’m the kind of coach where if a client doesn’t check in, I call them. If they fall off (the schedule) I meet them for a coffee and talk to them about it.”
If you’re thinking about making some fitness-based New Years resolutions, Mr Hering has some advice.
“The biggest thing for us as responsible coaches is not making it about New Year’s resolutions, but about a lifestyle change,” he said.
“We don’t want you doing it for three months then falling off the bandwagon.”
Daniel Strickland from CrossFit Townsville came second in the poll with 15 per cent of the vote.
Other popular choices were Aidan Harte from Ace of Harte’s Fitness, Donnie Riddiford from Iron Gate Fitness and Kevin De Haan from KD PT.
