Equipping kids to resolve and protect is at the forefront of a two-day school holiday workshop aimed at empowering students to stamp out schoolyard bullying.

According to a Kids Helpline study, 1 in 4 Australian students under 17 have reported being bullied.

Fight Club Townsville owner Eric Lemoime will teach schoolkids techniques to identify bullying and how to put an action plan in place at his free return to school anti-bullying program.

Mr Lemoime said the third workshop was inspired by the phycology of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the art of ground grappling.

“It is something I like to do every year at the beginning of school because kids are upgrading from primary to high school as well as kids changing schools which can make them nervous,” he said.

The course covers the four types of bullying – verbal, physical, social and cyber and teaches the ‘talk, tell, tackle’ technique.

“We teach not only talk to the bully but talk to friends, parents and teachers to make them aware of what is going on,” Mr Lemoime said.

“The next step I teach is, I am going to tell the bully, teachers and parents saying I don’t want this to go on I want it to stop.

“The worst case scenario is we teach them to tackle and just control the bully until they calm down and stop,” Mr Lemoime said.

The martial arts teacher of 20 years said the workshop also informs kids on how to help the bully understand their damaging behaviour.

“We not only go through how to come to an agreement with a bully before it gets to a physical stage but we try and help the bully’s as well,” he said.

“The bully’s aren’t bullying because they are happy, there is usually an underlying problem there and it is an opportunity for someone being bullied to help the bully.”

The return to school anti bullying workshop will be held on the 11th and 18th January at 12pm at Fight Club Townsville, 50 Bamford Lane, Kirwan. Call Eric on 0428 775 527 to book a spot.
