Townsville’s top drug police officer has lifted the lid on what’s being done locally to tackle the methamphetamine epidemic plaguing our streets as consumption soars across Queensland.

Northern Major and Organised Crime Squad officer in charge, Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Watts, said methamphetamine use was a serious issue in Townsville.

His comments came as the drug - also known as ice - continues to plague the state, with consumption spiking by 46.5 per cent in just two years.

“In my view, Townsville is not affected any more than any other community of a similar size,” Sgt Watts said.

“Methamphetamine use causes significant community harm due to the behaviours, and in particular the violence of those affected by this substance, and the Queensland Police Service are working hard to target and prosecute those responsible for distributing this drug in our community.

“Unfortunately, those addicted to methylamphetamine will routinely commit offences outside pure drug offending, either while affected by the drug or in seeking funds to purchase it.”

Sgt Watts said combating drug-seeking behaviour was key to minimising community harm and making Townsville safer.

He said police were investing significant resources into investigating syndicates and individuals involved in the distribution of meth and other illicit drugs in the community.

“To do this effectively, police fully utilise and investigate all information provided by members of the public to prevent, deter, disrupt and intercept illicit drug production, trafficking and sale in Townsville,” he said.

“If any member of the community has any information at all in relation to the use, supply or

trafficking of methylamphetamine in the community, I encourage them to report the matter to

Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“It doesn’t matter how small or insignificant you believe the information to be, that information may be the piece of the puzzle police need to identify and dismantle a drug offending syndicate.”
