MINING magnate Clive Palmer has openly endorsed Townsville mayoral candidate Greg Dowling while taking aim at the “Labor Party”.
Despite his company Mineralogy Pty Ltd having tipped $625,000 into Mr Dowling’s campaign, Mr Palmer had not publicly supported his United Australia Party colleague until today, saying it was “time for change in Townsville” while taking aim at the “Labor Party”.
Townsville City Council, unlike Brisbane City Council, doesn’t run party tickets at the local government election, and therefore there is technically no Labor team.
Mayor Jenny Hill and about half of the candidates on her team are Labor Party members, but Cr Hill has always maintained that her team cuts across the political divide.
Team Jenny Hill Division 2 candidate Nanette Radeck is a Katter’s Australian Party member.

“I couldn’t think of a better person to lead this great region forward than Greg – a local businessman for the past dozen years and of course one of Australia’s finest ever rugby league prop forwards,” Mr Palmer said.
“He and his family are committed to Townsville’s future.
“Stop the Labor Party rot that has infected this great city of Townsville and Vote 1 for Greg Dowling on election day.”
Mr Dowling, a small-business owner in Townsville, in January received the single largest campaign donation in Queensland’s electoral history via a $400,000 gift from Mineralogy.
He is running the “It’s Time for Townsville” team of five councillors, which includes Mr Palmer’s nephew Martin Brewster (Div 6).
