Cleveland Bay Chemical Company lodges DA for plant expansion

Roadmap to net zero shows door to nuclear energy 'is not being closed'

A TOWNSVILLE chemicals manufacturer is proceeding with plans to produce about 2000 tonnes of water treatment product aluminium chlorohydrate at its Stuart facility.

It will be the first time the chemical, to be used by councils, will be manufactured in Queensland.

State Treasurer Cameron Dick announced the project, as well as government support through its $50m Essential Goods and Supply Chain program, earlier this year.

The manufacturer, Cleveland Bay Chemical Company, has now lodged a development application with Townsville City Council.

The application said that while production of water treatment chemicals would remain below the level permitted under its Environmental Authority, the change in chemical composition triggered an amendment to its authority to ensure the chemicals, production process and product do not significantly increase environmental risk.

The company leases Townsville City Council land for its existing plant where it produces aluminium sulphate alongside the Cleveland Bay Wastewater Purification Plant.

The proposed extension aims to produce about 2000 tonnes a year of aluminium chlorohydrate through a two-stage batch reaction process across a pressurised reaction vessel and concentration tank. Aluminium metal will be delivered to the site in 40-tonne lots from Gladstone.

Hydrochloric acid, which will be required for the process and will also be delivered to the site in lots of up to 40 tonnes, will be stored in self-bunded tanks.

State MP for Mundingburra Les Walker said it was exciting to see Cleveland Bay Chemical Company planning the expansion of its facility. He said the project would support up to five ongoing jobs.

“The company is planning to produce aluminium chlorohydrate, which can be used for the treatment of drinking water and wastewater,” Mr Walker said.

“If there’s one thing this global pandemic has taught us it is the importance of making more things in Queensland for Queenslanders by Queenslanders.”
