A woman who pleaded guilty to ripping off Townsville residents more than $50,000 for her fake cancer treatment is back behind bars with her newborn child after giving birth at the weekend.
Lucy Wieland, who was pregnant when she was sentenced to two years’ jail in August, gave birth to her child over the weekend, and is reportedly back behind bars with the child.
Wieland pleaded guilty to seven charges including fraud, after documenting her fake cancer battle with terminal ovarian cancer, raising about $55,000 on Go Fund Me.
The 28-year-old also defrauded her ex-boyfriend, Bradley James Congerton, between the end of May and mid-October 2018, and that she also dishonestly obtained money from the Baseball Association of Townsville.
Her defence barrister, Michael Hibble told the court at her sentence that Wieland has a rare mental disorder where she faked her illness to gain sympathy.
Wieland told police she did not remember the seven months where she was telling friends and family she was sick.
Wieland recently appealed her sentence on the grounds it was “manifestly excessive”.
The decision on the appeal was meant to be handed down on Thursday, but it was postponed.
Wieland will face court again on October 29.
