All school children in North Queensland are being invited to take part in a four-day ‘cattle school’ this week, where they can learn about training, feeding, showing and judging cattle.

The event is being hosted by Calvary Christian College and set to run from May 15 to 18 at the Townsville Showgrounds.

Students from as far as Charters Towers, Ingham and Home Hill have already registered to take part, and an invitation has been extended to other schools in Townsville to get involved.

As part of the four-day school, cattle industry representatives will also conduct workshops on animal soundness, conformation, health, and wellbeing.

The idea for the four-day school comes off the back of the growing popularity of cattle clubs in high schools.

Calvary Christian College agriculture coordinator Murray Hair said he’s found students are interested in cattle clubs because it gives them a sense of belonging.

“Cattle clubs give opportunities for those students who are not academically high achievers,” Mr Hair said.

“Students like interacting with large animals and the adrenaline rush of leading large animals in competitions. Students also really enjoy preparing cattle for showing and also the challenge of competing in the animal judging competitions where students judge beef cattle evaluating the animals justifying their decisions before an ‘over judge’”.
