A YOUNG Burdekin rugby league fan has proven exactly why he should have a career behind a microphone after his commentating efforts were declared one of the best in the country.
Chase Christensen’s video of his commentary on a James Tedesco try in the 2019 State of Origin series put him in prime seats for this year’s Origin decider after he won NRL.com’s Chemist Warehouse Couch Commentator.
“I had to do a commentary video of me commentating a play in Origin and I was the best out of Australia,” Chase said.
“At halftime they put my commentary video up on the big screen.
“I chose the Tedesco winning try last year because it was one that I remembered off by heart even though I didn’t really like that he scored it.”
Chase said while he had not been back to school yet since being announced a winner, he had told a few friends about his commentary gold.
“They didn’t believe me at first,” he said.
The now 13-year-old was only aged two when he first became addicted to NRL and despite jumping on the field to play the sport locally this year, Chase said he would rather be watching the game.
“It’s really fun to watch,” he said.
“It’s just exciting watching all the teams play, especially when I watch my favourite team play.” He also likes finding out all the stats of players.
“Broncos were really bad this year and that is my favourite team. (Kotoni Staggs) was probably the only player that played pretty good this year.
“When I am older I want to be a sports journalist or a commentator or an NRL referee.”
