A woman in her 60s has been transported to Townsville University and is being treated for lower limb injuries and shock. She remains in hospital in a stable condition.
The driver of the third vehicle was uninjured and has been assisting forensic crash investigators with key information to piece together what’s occurred in the lead up to the crash.
Townsville District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Matt Lyons, who was on scene, said early investigations suggested the deceased male driver side swiped a car, forcing him into oncoming traffic where he then collided head on with the woman in her 60s.
The highway remains closed in both directions and is banked up for kilometres. Motorised are urged to avoid the area and delay travel where possible.
