The Brighter Lives Townsville Hospital Foundation is holding a Giving Day later this month to celebrate its 35th birthday of giving to the community.

Foundation CEO Stephanie Naunton said the Townsville charity had raised millions of dollars since its inception but the Giving Day was also about giving towards future projects across the Townsville Hospital and Health Service facilities.

“AI is changing the world, and importantly, AI changes our health technology,” she said.

“We need to fundraise to make sure we keep up with the innovation and the technology that comes about to make sure that it is the best care treatment for North Queenslanders.”

Brighter Lives is a completely local charity, with 100% of funds raised staying in North Queensland to support projects across the region, including equipment, services, and research.

Over the past three decades, the charity has funded numerous projects across the region, such as most recently funding a $173k laser to the Townsville University Hospital to treat children who have experienced burns and scarring in North Queensland.

To celebrate Giving Day, Townsville City Council will be colouring iconic Townsville landmarks, including; the city’s bridges, buildings and the Townsville sign blue and yellow, in honour of the Foundation’s colours.

Queensland Country Bank Stadium will also be joining and be lit up blue and yellow.

The CEO said North Queenslanders had a strong history of supporting local charities.

“We wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the community to give back. I can’t explain enough how grateful we are to the community, and we have been able to go for 35 years because of the donations of the community, and we’re wanting to continue on for the next 35 years with the help of the community.”

Nurse Educator Bernadette Clapperton will be giving up her time on Giving Day and is fundraising for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“The ICU wants to raise funds to purchase high back recliner chairs for our long term patients, just to provide some extra comfort for them and their families while they’re spending time in ICU,” she said.

The nurse encouraged the community to get behind Giving Day and support Brighter Lives.

“The ICU will be holding a bake sale in the lead up to giving day. We’ll be hosting that at the front of the hospital, and all the funds for that will go to the ICU Giving Day page.”
