Bravus needs more workers as Carmichael coal mine ramps up

A Queensland coal mine is seeking hundreds more employees in Townsville and Rockhampton as it ramps up production to capitalise on record prices. FULL LIST OF JOBS.

Coal usage is 'booming all over the world'

Bravus is seeking hundreds more workers for its Carmichael coal mine as the company ramps up production to capitalise on record prices and strong demand for the commodity.

Bravus Mining and Resources chief operating officer Mick Crowe was in Townsville this week briefing business representatives on the mine which began exports earlier this year.

The $3bn project has been developed to initially produce 10 million tonnes of coal a year but has approvals to expand to 60 million tonnes.

Townsville and Rockhampton are the primary employment hubs for the project.

A Bravus Mining and Resources spokesman says the mine is producing high quality coal for export to nations around the world that want to lift their people out of energy poverty.

“The mine continues to safely and efficiently ramp up to its constructed level of production which is in the order of 10 million tonnes per annum,” the spokesman said.

“As we ramp up, we’re delighted to continue to offer roles for experienced truck, dozer, grader and loader operators and tradespeople through our mining services contractor MacKellar Group.

“We believe coal will be a vital part of a sustainable energy mix for decades to come and anyone interested in joining the team at Carmichael should look to apply through the Carmichael Jobs portal.”

While about 40 positions are being offered on its portal at present, business representatives have been told the company needs another 260 workers.

Already, about 1000 people are working at the mine 400km south of Townsville.

Townsville Chamber of Commerce president Chris Rockemer said the project and others like it presented huge opportunities for the city to expand.

“We applaud Bravus for setting up operations based out of Townsville and for supporting the Townsville economy,” Mr Rockemer said.

“I think we’ve all got a job to do promoting Townsville as a place where the job opportunities are abundant. The city is a fantastic place to work, given its unique lifestyle aspects.

“Many of our members like Bravus are currently recruiting in all kinds of fields.”

Media reports have quoted executives from parent company Adani Enterprises saying Bravus plans to export 11 or 12 million tonnes of coal this year and could produce as much as 30 million tonnes within three years if logistics issues are resolved.

According to this week’s September Resources and Energy Quarterly report, thermal and metallurgical coal from Australia are expected to earn around $120bn in 2022–‍23.
