Residents in Garbutt have woken to the sound of loud bangs and smoke after a car was gutted by fire Friday morning near Townsville’s airport.
According to a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman, a car was reported on fire in a Garbutt street near the city’s airport.
“A car was reported on fire on Lonerganne street in Garbutt at around 5.41am this morning, one crew attended and were able to extinguish the fire just after 6am,” the spokeswoman said.
“That crew is still on scene, just dampening down, there are also Townsville City Council clean-up crews in attendance. There were a few loud bangs while the vehicle was alight which alerted people to it.”
A video posted to social media this morning shows the fire underway, with the vehicle completely consumed by flames in the centre of Lonerganne street.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing, with a Queensland Police Service spokesman said the car had been discovered ‘in the middle of the road, completely engulfed’.
