A NORTH Queensland man’s day off “on the drink” ended in chaos after he flipped his car in a drunken highway crash.

Ayr man Ryan David Gilmore was more than four times the legal limit when he jumped behind the wheel of his Toyota Landcruiser in the early morning of June 19.

Townsville Magistrates Court on Friday heard on that date, emergency services crews were called to reports of a single vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway at Alligator Creek at 2am.

They found the Landcruiser flipped upside down on its roof, with Gilmore sitting nearby.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Tim Madsen said Gilmore would not speak with police, but was taken to hospital for treatment where he recorded a blood-alcohol content of .217.

“Tyre marks (on the road) suggest he was driving inbound, swerved to the left hand side and crashed on the opposite side – showing he failed to maintain control of the car,” Sergeant Madsen said.

Gilmore was found near his car after police were called to a crash on the Bruce Highway.

Gilmore pleaded guilty to charges of driving under the influence of liquor, and driver to have proper control of a vehicle.

The court heard Gilmore had one previous drink driving charge on his history from 2013.

His lawyer, Anderson Telford, said it was to his client’s credit that he had not reoffended since, but Mr Smid was not convinced, asking if it was a “big deal”.

“ … Most of us here don’t have any convictions …,” Mr Smid said.

Mr Telford said on the day of the offence, Gilmore was on his first day off in 13 days and then “got on the drink” with a friend.

The court heard Gilmore had been driving from Townsville to Ayr at the time, which troubled Mr Smid.

Mr Telford said his client had been in hospital for four days after the crash, and had since taken up with a psychologist.

“I think about other people on the road especially when high speeds are involved and when an alcohol reading is that high …,” Mr Smid said.

Gilmore was fined a total of $1500 and barred from the roads for 14 months.

Convictions were recorded.
