Authorities are scanning the water for crocodile reportedly spanning between 2.5m and 4m in size.
Two Department of Environment and Science boats are searching for the crocodile which was last seen off The Strand, opposite to the Water Park.
A department spokesman said there had been multiple reports from the public of a crocodile.
He said one witness said the croc was about 4m while another said it was 2m.
Townsville Bulletin photographer Alix Sweeney said the croc appeared near the boats, about 20m from the shore.
One boat is now leading the reptile offshore.
