Veteran community has recently experienced a 'very challenging period'

A TOWNSVILLE business has been recognised for its outstanding support of veteran employees as part of the Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Awards.

Australian Expedition Vehicles has been named the Outstanding Veterans’ Employer of the Year just months after it was first recognised for its work with veterans.

The annual awards recognise the contributions veterans make in the civilian workforce and the organisations that support them.

In October, the same awards named AEV as the Veterans’ Employer of the Year – Small.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said AEV was a worthy recipient with veterans making up about 50 per cent of the mechanical engineering company’s workforce.

“AEV design, build and deliver specialised military and civilian off-roads vehicles as well as vehicle engineering, modification and maintenance support services, providing the perfect opportunity for the men and women who have served in the Australian Defence Force to transition their skills to the civilian workforce,” Mr Morrison said.

“It fills me with great pride to see a local Queensland business providing targeted employment opportunities for veterans and working with employees to adapt jobs to the needs of the veteran. It’s businesses like AEV that provide hope and support for anyone wishing to translate those skills learned in the ADF.”

AEV managing director Michael McMillan said he wanted to create opportunities like the ones he enjoyed.

“Understanding the needs of veterans is very important when creating a workplace that meets their needs,” he said.

“They want to be part of a team that is delivering something, whether that be a product or a service, and they want to be part of a like-minded group.

“I am proud we have created a business where we make sure the role fits the veteran, their skill set, help them gain qualifications and where they can see opportunities once they leave the ADF.”

Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Minister Andrew Gee said this was a significant achievement for the veteran-owned business.

“They are a success story that should be a beacon for other Australian businesses,” Mr Gee said.

“It makes good business sense to employ our veterans as we know they have a strong work ethic, work well in a team and bring the abilities learnt in the ADF to the workforce.”

Herbert MP Phillip Thompson said AEV was a renowned manufacturer.

“It’s fantastic to see a local veteran-owned company support our servicemen and women in their transition from military to civilian life,” Mr Thompson said.
