Stolen car terrorises motorist

A Townsville dad has opened up about the terrifying moment he thought he would die while being terrorised by machete-wielding youths who chased him home in a stolen car.

A Kirwan resident said he was driving to the local service station to fuel up and get his daughter a “choc milk” for her 7th birthday when he came across a stolen silver Holden Colorado blocking the road in Kirwan about 5am on Tuesday, July 18.

The dad, who asked not to be named due to safety concerns, said an offender armed with a machete got out of the stolen car and began approaching his vehicle after he flashed his lights to get them to move.

“The passenger ran to my car with a machete, so I sped off (down Golf Links Dr) heading towards Brothers Leagues Club,” he said.

“They were ramming me through every roundabout until Hervey Range Rd, where I was pushed through there at 120km/h spinning out of control.”

He said it was at that “extremely frightening” moment he thought he might die.

“I managed to gain my composure and headed towards my house, ringing my wife to open the garage door and told her what was happening,” he said.

“She rang triple-0, and I was able to get home, but they chased me into the garage, where I armed myself with a butcher’s knife.

“My neighbour came out with a metal bar, and they ran back to the Colorado to try to run us down. Eventually, they left, saying they’d be back later.”

Thieves inside the stolen car filmed their despicable antics during the chase and posted it later on social media with the text: ‘You don’t chase us, we chase you.’

Police said the Holden Colorado was allegedly stolen from a Kirwan address about 4.20am on July 18.

They said they were also investigating reports that it was spotted driving dangerously on Willowbank Drive, Kern Brothers Drive and Hervey Range Road around 5.20am.

Police deployed tyre spikes in Riverside Boulevard at about 5pm later that day, and the stolen car was found dumped in a car park at the end of Buchan and Parkinson Road, Douglas.

Police said at this stage, all these investigations remain open, and a 15-year-old girl has been dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
