Rasmussen State School and Kelso State School students have won top gongs at a national tech competition after inventing classroom gadgets.
Over the course of several months, four girls from Rasmussen State School coding a sensor system which flashes green and alerts staff when the inside temperature hits 28 degrees, telling them to put the aircon on.
The sensor system stops the aircon from running needlessly all day and won the school second place in the year 5-6 division at the Young ICT Explorers (YICTE).
Alongside the aircon system, the four girls built another sensor to alert teachers when the noise level gets too loud in a classroom.
Rasmussen State School principal Jodie Sewer said she was incredibly proud of her students for their aircon project.
“We are so thrilled to receive recognition for the incredible work of four wonderful young ladies, Emily, Malayla, Chloe and Jaydah,” Ms Sewer said.
Kelso State School also brought home an award from the same national comp, placing third in the year 3-4 division for a ‘ColourLock’ invention which updates the classroom ‘hall pass’ or ‘toilet pass’ system.
The team of three boys made a colour-coded lock that uses a ‘colour of the day’ exit word to open and close doors.
The door system also includes an alarm in case a student leaves without the proper exit colour while the teacher is working with other students.
The YICTE competition was founded by software company SAP and partners with The Smith Family to support tech learning in schools.
