A TOWNSVILLE man has been jailed after he went on a rage and smashed up a local police station causing serious damage.

Matthew Kyle Bower, 36, pleaded guilty via video to one charge of wilful damage of police property in the Townsville Magistrates Court on April 6.

The court heard the local roof plumber was “spiralling” when he attended the Deeragun police station in relation to another matter and subsequently caused more than $600 of damage when he let his anger fly.

Police prosecutor Anita Page said Bower was on parole when on February 22 he attended the station and smashed a sliding-glass door.

Bower’s defence lawyer Chasely Kern said her client was a social drinker and “used illicit substances in the past”.

“At the time of the offence he was trying to keep off ice,” Ms Kern said.

Ms Kern said Bower was “not in a good head space” when he committed the offence and conceded he had acted poorly.

The father-of-four’s eight-page criminal history and pre-sentence custody certificate was tendered to the court.

Magistrate Kenneth Taylor sentenced Bower to four months imprisonment for the offence.

He was ordered to pay $677.17 restitution for the damage to police property.

Bower will be eligible for parole on June 22.

A conviction was recorded.
