A toddler is in a critical but stable condition in the Townsville University Hospital after being hit by a car

A three-year-old boy is in a critical but stable condition after being hit by a car in Kelso.

Police spent the afternoon taking photographs of the scene and a blue Hyundai Sonata which it is understood was involved in the incident.

A toddler who was struck by a vehicle in Kelso yesterday afternoon remains in Townsville University Hospital in a critical but stable condition, a hospital spokesman said.

Emergency crews treated the three-year-old boy at the scene of the incident.

A three-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being hit by a car in Kelso.

The Queensland Ambulance Service rushed the toddler to Townsville University Hospital yesterday afternoon where he was in a critical condition last night.

The incident happened about 3pm yesterday at Charles Moroney Park at the corner of Hammond Way and Garnet St.

Police spent the afternoon taking photographs of the scene and a blue Hyundai Sonata, which it is understood was involved in the incident.

Apart from the police, a yellow Kinder Surprise toy container lying underneath the Hyundai was the only clue about what had happened.

The incident occurred only a couple of metres from kids playing on the playground at the park on Hammond Way.

Witnesses who arrived after the incident saw the owner of the car with two small children talking to police.

Police confirmed the driver had also been taken to hospital. Hammond Way resident Eddy Rennie was in his back garden planting avocado seeds when the incident happened.

“I never saw a thing but then I heard the siren and they stopped dead in front of our place,” he said.

“The street was blocked, there was an ambulance, three police cars and then the fire brigade pulled up behind them and there was police and kids everywhere.” The toddler remains in Townsville University Hospital.
