For the first time Charters Towers Regional Council will be led by a female CEO.
Karina Ewer was confirmed as the new chief executive officer for the NQ council on June 30.
On the same day her previous employer - Berrigan Shire, in the NSW Riverina, population 8,666 - made it public that Ms Ewer was resigning from her role due to family reasons, and will leave the job on July 25.
Before Berrigan, Ms Ewer worked in South Australia at Streaky Bay Council (population 2,165) as CEO from 2019 to 2021.
Before Streaky Bay, Ms Ewer was a regional manager and worked in HR for Queensland Ambulance, and was a senior asset manager for the Department of Natural Resources and Mines.
Charters Towers Regional Council oversees a population of 12,040 residents over 68,580 square kilometres, making it the biggest job Ms Ewer has ever had.
Ms Ewer said as someone who grew up in North Queensland, and worked much of her life in North Queensland, her new role in Charters Towers felt like a homecoming.
“I am honoured to return to a region I care deeply about and to contribute to the future of the Charters Towers region,” Ms Ewer said.
Ms Ewer will formally start as CEO on Monday, August 18.
