Townsville University Hospital opens dedicated paediatric space

North Queensland children visiting hospital for emergency care will now be treated in a dedicated new space by a team of paediatric emergency specialists.

NORTH Queensland children visiting hospital for emergency care will now be treated in a dedicated new space by a team of paediatric emergency specialists.

The space aims to improve the hospital experience for young patients and their families attending Townsville University Hospital.

Senior paediatric emergency specialist Olwen Gilbert said patients can access the paediatric space through TUH’s emergency department entrance.

“Having a dedicated paediatric area is one piece of the puzzle in enhancing patient care for children and their families,” Dr Gilbert said.

“What is great about this team is that we tend to see things in a unique and paediatric-centric way which allows us to make the space and procedures more child-friendly.”

She said the unit would work in collaboration with the paediatric ward and paediatric intensive care unit.

Director of emergency Dr Deanne Crosbie said the space would provide a supportive environment for parents and children.

“Having distinct spaces for our emergency patients is really beneficial, especially during what is likely a stressful time for everyone involved,” Dr Crosbie said.

Paediatric emergency specialist Dr Emma Whyte said the next goal would be to increase the team’s capacity through recruitment.
