Townsville Orchid Show kicks off for another year

The numbers of orchids may be down due to the recent wet weather but that won’t dampen the enthusiasm for the Townsville Orchid’s Society’s first show of the year.

The numbers of orchids may be down due to the recent wet weather but that won’t dampen the enthusiasm for the Townsville Orchid’s Society’s first show of the year.

The 2025 Autumn Orchid Show starts today (Friday) and runs through to Sunday and society president Troy McGill said there would still be an abundant array of orchids up for grabs.

“A lot of people’s flowers have been affected, but there’s still going to be a lot of plants for sale,” he said.

Mr McGill said the society’s Kirwan Hall had also suffered damage from the ongoing deluge.

“We’ve had a bit of damage to the hall with the weather this year, and that’s going to cost us a bit of money.

So everybody who comes through and pays that $3 to and buys plants, some of that money comes back to us, and we’ll be able to use that for refurbishments of the hall.”

The president said they were keen to get younger members into the club.

“The idea of the club is to teach people how to grow so if you’ve got any interested come along,” he said.

“If you can grow on orchid, you can grow other plants. So it’s a good starting basis. Come here and learn about how to grow an orchid, because its exactly the same as growing other plants, and it all works on the fertilisers, how to deal with pests, how to deal with fungi and things like that.

“You learn it here, and you can put it into any, any plant system that you want to grow,” he said.

With a military background the president said he became interested in orchids while out in the jungle environments.

“I got into orchids by being in the army and walking around in the jungles and seeing them growing in the wild.

“Like everyone else here, it’s the challenge of trying to grow something and get it presentable,” he said.

Doors are open at the society’s hall in Charles Street, Kirwan from 9am-4pm today and Saturday and from 9am to 2pm on Sunday.
