As reported in The Chronicle in the days after the crash, the teen and a woman friend of similar age had met the driver at a CBD hotel earlier that night and he had offered the women a lift home.

The other woman told The Chronicle they were not far from home when the crash occurred.

“(Once we stopped) I sat there, woke up and started screaming (my friend’s) name,” she said at the time.

The vehicle had split into two pieces on impact with the tree.

“The car was literally squished and the back was squeezed in between the skip bin — I couldn’t see her in the car, the floor wasn’t there,” she said at the time.

“I saw her lying down on the ground, moaning with pain — she couldn't move, couldn’t talk.”
