Voice to Parliament referendum: Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price event in Toowoomba sells out at 1400 tickets

Controversial anti-Voice Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price will speak at a sold-out Toowoomba venue in the coming days, after more than 1400 tickets sold were snapped up.

An event featuring prominent “No” campaigner against the upcoming Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has sold out in Toowoomba.

Senator Price will enjoy the largest audience of her national tour so far when 1400 people cram into Rumours International on August 14 to listen to her.

The controversial politician and Warlpiri woman has become a leading advocate against the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum, which was sparked by the creation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2017 as the culmination of decades of political action.

The news comes after shock polling indicated significant opposition to the Voice referendum in Toowoomba.

She is being hosted by Groom MP Garth Hamilton, who said he had looked to change the venue due to the sheer demand for tickets.

“We went from 1250 to 1400, that was the advice of what we could fit,” he said.

“We were considering changing the venue, we could’ve sold more tickets — we’re still getting people call up.

“The biggest one she’s done is 500 in the Redlands and she’s doing one in Sydney that is 900.

“I have no doubt we could’ve passed 2000, we just left it too late to change the venue.”

Mr Hamilton said while Senator Price had connections to Toowoomba, he said timing had played a big role in the strong interest.

“We underestimated the interest in it — I think it’s Toowoomba itself and the timing of it so close to the Voice referendum,” he said.

Mr Hamilton said a live-stream was being developed for people missed out on tickets.

Rumours International owner Jim Aspromourgos said the level of interest in the event was comparable to previous shows for famous rock stars.

“We’ve been graced by the greats on our stage over the years so we’ve been sold out with full venues many times before, whether it be John Farnam when ‘You’re the Voice’ was number one or Jimmy Barnes,” he said.

“My personal opinion, the community are thirsty for more information and clarity around the confusion of information presented so far.

“Jacinta allows the community to see it from a different perspective.”
